Women's Tennis Tops Providence, 6-1

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's tennis team improved to 9-7 overall with their victory over visiting Providence College this afternoon on the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts.
Monica Yajima paired with Caroline Emhardt to defeated Providence's Marisela Aviles and Maria Clara Bernardez, 8-6 in the No. 1 doubles position. Sharissa Ryan and Kristen Liu topped Courtney Burek and Bianca Sciotti in a decisive 8-1 match at second doubles, and Alyssa Ruiz and Victoria Pirrello fell to Ayushi Sinha and Melissa Ferry in a close 8-6 match in the third spot. 


In singles play, Yajima handled Marisela Aviles 6-1, 6-2, to win her fifth straight singles match in the No. 1 spot. At second singles, Ryan also continued her solid play by topping Maria Clara Bernardez 6-1, 6-3. Kristen Liu was unable to hold off Ayushi Sinha at third singles and fell 6-4, 6-3. At No. 4 singles, Emhardt was victorious over Courtney Burek, 6-1, 6-1 while Ruiz defeated Melissa Ferry 6-1, 6-3. Rounding out the scoring for the Stags was Pirrello who topped Alex Gerry 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 6 position.

The Stags look to stay undefeated in the MAAC as they travel to take on Rider tomorrow, April 11. Rider is now 3-13 and 0-5 in the MAAC. They are on a two-match win streak with victories this week over Wagner and St. Francis College. First serve is set for 3pm.
