Fairfield Finishes Off 2016 MAAC Championships

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – On the final day of the 2016 MAAC Championships, the Fairfield University swimming and diving team made one last effort to climb the leaderboards. They were able to set two new program marks, one relay and one individual. But in the end, the men of Rider University claimed their fifth consecutive MAAC Championship while the women of Marist grabbed their sixth consecutive title.

The Fairfield women’s team placed sixth in the final standings with a point total of 351, while the men’s side totaled 210 points for seventh place.

Connor Daly set a new school record for the fourth straight day. On Saturday in the 200 Butterfly, the senior swam a 1:50.78 besting his own record of 1:51.73.

In the final event of the meet, the women’s quartet of Kelly Mulligan, Kelly Cordes, Liz Avery, and Donna Lam set a new Fairfield record in the 400 Freestyle relay with a time of 3:33.69.

Kelly Mulligan placed 14th overall in the 200 Backstroke with a time of 2:10.25.

For the men, Andrew Gormley grabbed the 14th spot as well in the 200 Backstroke Final finishing in a personal best time of 1:56.00.

Kelly Cordes qualified for the100 Freestyle A Final and placed sixth with a personal best time of 53.24. Liz Avery competed in the100 Freestyle B Final placing 12th with a time of 53.97.

Brian Burke swam in the 100 Freestyle B Final and claimed the 16th spot stopping the clock at a personal best 48.21.  

Emily Vlass qualified for the 200 Breaststroke A Final and earned an eighth place finish clocking in at 2:29.45. And in the B Final Callie Vacchiano placed 12th overall with a personal best time of 2:31.62.

Grace Goddard placed fourth in the 200 Butterfly A Final with a time of 2:09.57, missing out on third place by just 0.01 seconds.

Daniel Pires qualified for the 1-Meter Dive A Final and placed sixth with a score of 257.60.

In the 400 Freestyle relay event, the men’s team of Brian Burke, Andrew Tavcar, Connor Daly, and Ben Nelligan placed eighth with a time of 3:20.60.  

In the 1650 Freestyle event, senior Danielle Latino placed 13th overall with a personal best time of 18:22.54. Two spots behind her was freshman Carloyn Kern who clocked in with a personal best time of 18:29.35. In the same event for the men, Andrew Robinson earned a 15th place finish with a time of 16:34.36. Jameson Duncan finished in 18th touching the wall in a personal best 16:42.40. Pat Orkins claimed 20th finishing in personal best16:59.99. And finishing in 22nd was Chris Capparis with a personal best time of 17:05.91.

 

Saturday’s Preliminaries:

200 BackstrokeBrianna Thompson finished tied for 17th with a personal best time of 2:11.19, and was forced into a swim off with Iona’s Laura Mongillo but placed just 0.36 seconds behind her. Maddison Feeley placed 27th clocking in at a personal best 2:21.98.

Kyle Lally placed 18th with a personal best time of 1:58.23. Nick Delfico came in 21st clocking in at a personal best 2:00.87. Edmund Falcigno wasn’t far behind coming in at a personal best 2:05.44.

100 FreestyleDonna Lam placed 19th with a personal best time of 54.73. Feeley came in 27th clocking in at a personal best 56.13. Michelle Pleban placed right after her touching the wall in 56.25.

Ben Nelligan came in 17th finishing with a personal best time of 47.71. Andrew Tavcar placed 24th clocking in at a personal best 47.97. Justin Touve was just two places behind him with a time of 48.02.

200 Breaststroke -  Meghan Guinee placed in 21st with a time of 2:36.24.

Nick Cannone came in 20th finishing in a personal best 2:23.24.

200 Butterfly – Lam placed 19th with a time of 2:17.78. Danielle Latino came in 23rd touching the wall in 2:20.59.

Kyle Lally came in 17th with a personal best time of 1:58.83. Evan Gorman placed 20th with a time of 1:59.46.
