EASTON, Pa. -- The Fairfield University men's tennis team topped Lafayette, 4-3, on Saturday, February 7, for their first win of the 2015 campaign at the Winning Touch Tennis Lehigh Valley Courts.
Fairfield kicked off the match on a 4-0 run, winning the doubles point before posting victories in the No. 1 – No. 3 singles spots.
The Fairfield duo of Cameron Amyot and Dylan Appel defeated Lafayette’s Brian Pinkard and Jake Lazer, 6-3, in the No. 2 spot while the Stags’ George Tioutine and Luke Lemieux notched a 6-4 win over the Leopards’ Chris Matturri and Gavin Studner in the No. 3 slot. At No. 1 singles, Ofir Solomon and Brad Orban fell to Lafayette’s Brandon Goldstein and Brian Stefanowicz, 6-4.
Fairfield kept the winning-streak going as Solomon downed Goldstein, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. In the No. 2 slot was rookie Orban who posted a, 6-3, 6-1, win over Pinkard while Amyot edged Stefanowicz by a count of 6-3, 7-6(4), at No. 3 singles. Lafayette battled back, recording victories in the No. 4-6 singles spots, but it was not enough to catch the Stags. At No. 4, rookie Appel fell to Lazer, 6-2, 6-2, while classmate Lemieux battled but ultimately fell to Matturri, 6-4, 3-6, 11-9, in the No. 5 spot. Rounding out play was Gabriel Pamich who was edged by Lafayette’s Mason Keel, 8-5, at No. 6 singles.
Fairfield (1-2) is scheduled to bring competition back to the Solaris Club in Stamford, Conn. The Stags will take on Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday, February 20 at 8:00 p.m.
