FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team fell to the Stony Brook Seawolves by a 12-10 final score in Tuesday non-conference action at Don and Chris Cook Field. The Seawolves scored three runs in the top of the seventh to turn a 10-9 Fairfield lead into an eventual 12-10 decision.
The two teams combined to score 18 runs in the first three innings with each team scoring at least one run in three-straight frames.
Matthew Bucciero and
TJ Schmalzle cut into a 3-0 Stony Brook lead in the bottom of the first with back-to-back homers. The duo have now combined for 24 homers with Bucciero leading the MAAC and tying a career-high with 15.
The Stags would plate four in the second to take the lead. Bucciero tied up the contest with a two-run single and would be followed by a
Connor Scanlan RBI single to put the Stags up 5-4.
After Stony Brook plated five in the third, the Stags responded with a four-spot in their at-bats.
Luke Spencer started the scoring with a safety squeeze that brought in
Dom Camera. Schmalzle and Scanlan would add RBI singles while
Jake Haarde added a RBI with a sacrifice fly.
Schmalzle gave the Stags the lead and plated their 10th run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
After the offensive slugfest in the first three innings, the Stags bullpen settled things down with
Will Youngman providing three strong innings in relief. The Seawolves would regain the lead in the seventh to take the 12-10 decision.
In total, the Stags had 28 baserunners in the contest with 15 hits, eight walks, three hit batters and a dropped third strike. Scanlan led the team with four hits while
Ryan Paine picked up three.
Fairfield will finally hit the road for conference action, making the short trip to Quinnipiac to face the Bobcats for a three-game set starting on Friday at 3pm.
