EDISON, N.J. – Two members of the Fairfield University Baseball team earned weekly accolades from the MAAC as
Matthew Bucciero was named the conference's Player of the Week and
Harrison Engle was tabbed the Rookie of the Week. The duo helped the Stags to a pivotal conference sweep of Mount St. Mary's to propel the squad to second in the conference standings.
Matt provided some clutch hits including three homers this weekend," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "We are hoping his teammates jump on board with their bats heating up for the last four conference weekends. Harry did a nice jump keeping the Mount hitters off balance by mixing three pitches through nearly six innings. We are excited about his future here at Fairfield as he learns more about pitching efficiency and location of his pitches in Division I."
Bucciero led the team with a .571 average while crushing four homers and seven RBI in Fairfield's 3-1 week. He tallied eight combined hits while also having a two-homer day in the finale against the Mount. For the season, Bucciero has already tied his career-high with 15 homers which leads the MAAC and ranks in the top-40 in the nation. He had an amazing 2.096 OPS in the last week while reaching base 12 times in 18 plate appearances.
Engle had one of the best starts to his early collegiate career by tossing 5.2 scoreless frames in the finale win over the Mount. He scattered two hits while striking out six in picking up the victory. For the season, Engle is tied for second on the team with three victories with batters hitting .205 against the right-hander. He is also second on the squad with 44 strikeouts.
The Stags hold an 18-15 overall record before their midweek contest at Fordham and a 13-5 league mark before their home series against Iona this weekend.
