Softball Hosts Siena For Three-Game Series This Weekend

Teams Will Play Single Game Friday, Doubleheader Saturday

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University softball team gets back to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play this weekend by hosting Siena University for a three-game series. Due to inclement weather predictions for Sunday, the three-game set will now include a single game on Friday, April 17 at 3 pm and the regularly-scheduled doubleheader beginning at 12 pm on Saturday.

The Stags are coming off an impressive come-from-behind victory against Central Connecticut State University on Wednesday afternoon. Fairfield trailed twice in the game, including one deficit of four runs, but managed to chip away at the lead until winning the game in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Sammie Dougherty brought home the winning run with a sacrifice fly, her second of the game and her third RBI overall. Her run production has been especially high over the last 10 games as the infielder has collected 12 RBI and has earned a .417 batting average with five runs scored. Seven of her 12 RBI during this stretch came with two out in the inning. She moved into a tie for the team lead in RBI with 24, joining senior Anna Paravati for that distinction.

Sophomore Ava Armuth totes the best batting average on the team with a .327 percentage after picking up three hits in six at-bats over the last two non-conference games this week. She has a hit in 16 of her last 21 games, posting a .350 batting average over the timeline (20 of 57) with 10 RBI. She also stole 14 of her 16 bases this season during this latest string of games dating back to March 14.

Alyssa Weinberg and Peyton Shields continue to handle the starting pitching duties for the most part as the pair has combined for 17 of the team's 19 wins. Delaney Moquin has also received a few starting assignments but picked up her first collegiate win in the circle in relief against Central Connecticut on Wednesday.

Siena has a slight edge on the Stags in the MAAC standings, owning a 12-4 mark that gives the team an advantage in winning percentage. The Saints have enjoyed much success on the road, winning 13 of 18 games off campus to help boost its overall record to 21-11.

Junior Gracie Goewey has been at the heart of the team's success both in the batter's box and in the pitching circle. The right hander owns an 11-5 record as a pitcher which includes a no-hitter against Manhattan last week. She is also the team's top hitter with a .405 batting average, stroking five home runs with 19 RBI. Emma Peterson serves as the team's top run producer with 32 RBI to go along with her .391 batting average and team-best nine home runs.

Following the weekend, Fairfield will play a midweek MAAC doubleheader at Manhattan University. The twin bill is scheduled for Tuesday, April 21 with a 2 pm first pitch.
