FAIRFIELD, Conn. – For the fourth time in as many games, the Fairfield University softball team came away with a win in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. The Stags trailed by a run early but reeled off six consecutive runs to pick up a 6-2 victory against Mount St. Mary's.
In each of their last four MAAC wins, Fairfield has put at least six runs on the score board. Today, the home team stroked seven hits including three doubles that translated into its half-dozen runs. Designated player
Chela Kovar paced the attack with two hits and a pair of RBI, one of six Stags to register a base hit in the game. And, six different student-athlete accounted for the team's total.
"We did a nice job adjusting to their off-speed pitches," Head Coach
Julie Brzezinski said. "We ended up moving to the back of the box which helped us a lot. Our kids were seeing the ball better especially after the first time through the lineup."
The Mount took the early lead with a run in the second inning which came off the bat of catcher Tristin Koerner. The senior sent the ball over the left-center fence to put her team in front by a 1-0 count.
The Stags took the lead in the bottom of third inning, wrapping a pair of hits with a misplayed ball in the outfield to plate a pair of runs.
Ava Armuth started the inning with ball to the outfield which dropped and resulted in three bases. After a ground out to first base,
Anna Paravati tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right field.
With two outs and the bases empty,
Delaney Whieldon restarted the offense with a double to right center field for the team's first hit. She took third on a wild pitch before
Sammie Dougherty found a hole on the left side of the infield for an RBI single.
Fairfield tacked on a run in the fourth inning with Kovar being in the middle of the opportunity. She led off with single before yielding to
Lauren Osland as a pinch runner. After
Martina Gutierrez bunted Osland over a base, Armuth dropped a single into right field that chased Osland home for a 3-1 lead.
The Stags closed out their scoring in the fifth inning again with two outs. Paravati led off the inning with walk but still resided at first base following a pair of fly balls to the outfield.
Quinn McGonigle worked her way on the base paths with a walk, setting up Kovar's two-run double to bring the score to 5-1. She would score the team's last run off Gutierrez's base hit to left center field, making the score 6-1.
Pitcher
Alyssa Weinberg found her stride from the second inning forward, allowing no runs until a late rally by the Mount. She retired nine straight hitters which carried the lefty to two outs in the seventh inning. The visitors mounted a rally with three consecutive hits to score a run, but Weinberg earned a strikeout to end the game.
Fairfield and The Mount will complete their three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 pm.
