Softball Rallies For 2-1 Win Over Yale

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University softball team went into the bottom of the sixth with just two hits on the scoreboard, but was able to piece three hits together to score what proved to be the game winning run against Yale University ,edging the Bulldogs by a 2-1 count.

In that decisive sixth inning, Delaney Whieldon sent a pitch up the middle of the diamond for a one-out base hit. She yielded to Darby Weller who stepped in as a pinch runner, and the sophomore put herself into scoring position with a stolen base. Anna Paravati stepped into the batter's box and sent a ball into right field for a single, chasing Weller home with the team's second run.

Faith Camilleri kept the inning in progress with a single to put runners on first and second. Both runners moved up a base when Ava Armuth pulled a ground ball to second base but a fly out would end the inning to keep the lead at one run.

Pitcher Alyssa Weinberg, who entered the game in the fifth inning, had little trouble finishing out the game. The only blemish in the inning was a two-out walk but the lefthander fanned the next hitter with a called third strike.

Peyton Shields earned the start in the pitching circle and performed well in the role. While she allowed runners to reach base in each of her four innings, she was able to work her way through the traffic including an inning-ending double play in the third inning.

Yale scored its only run in the fourth inning without the benefit of a hit. A hit batter and three walks produced the visitors' run as Maddie Latta took a 3-2 pitch off the plate to force home the run to tie the score at 1-1.

Fairfield scored first in the game when Armuth launched the ball over the right-center field fence for a solo home run, her third of the season which ties for her with Whieldon for the top spot in that category.

Shields struck out three and allowed just three hits through her four innings in the pitching circle. Weinberg followed up by striking out five hitters in three innings while surrendering just two hits and a walk in her three-inning stint.

Fairfield will return to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play this weekend when it hosts Niagara University for a three-game series. The games are scheduled for a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
