FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team will welcome crosstown rivals Sacred Heart to Don and Chris Cook Field in their first battle as conference foes for a three-game series this weekend. With the inclement weather in the forecast, the series will start with a doubleheader on Friday at 11am and conclude with a scheduled finale on Saturday at 1pm.
The Stags will be riding an eight-game winning streak into the series, the nation's fifth-longest streak. Fairfield kept that winning streak with their largest ninth-inning comeback in over a decade as they rallied from an 11-7 deficit into a 15-11 victory.
Matthew Bucciero picked up the biggest hit with a two-out, two-run triple to break the tied score. In all, the Stags scored eight runs on just three hits in the top of the ninth.
Bucciero led the Stags with three hits, one of 10 different Stags to pick up base knocks.
Kevin Kell got the win with two hitless innings. Kell leads the pitching staff with a 0.68 ERA in a team-best 12 appearances.
Fairfield picked up their 20th win of the season, one of 50 teams in the country to post 20 victories. The Stags have found this success by getting on base, leading the MAAC with a .420 on-base percentage. Fairfield has also drawn 179 walks, the ninth-best number in Division I.
Nick Sturino leads the MAAC and ranks in the top-five nationally with 32 walks.
On the pitching side, the Stags lead the conference in: ERA (4.11), hits allowed per nine innings (7.8), WHIP (1.34), and strikeout-to-walk ratio (1.77).
Sacred Heart brings a 13-13 overall record into the series after taking two of three from Siena last weekend. The Pioneers are 8-4 in the MAAC and have won all four of their conference sets. Gavin Donohue is the team leader with a .348 average while hitting four homers and 20 RBI.
Fairfield will play two midweek games in the upcoming ledger, hosting Central Connecticut and traveling to UMass.
