EDISON, N.J. – The Fairfield University Baseball team picked up two weekly MAAC awards with Luke Nomura earning the MAAC Player of the Week and Ben Alekson being named the MAAC Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season. The duo helped the Stags to a series sweep over Merrimack and improve their league-lead with a 16-2 conference mark.
 
Nomura was one of the Stags' many power bats in the three-game sweep by crushing three homers in the series while also legging out a triple. He hit an even .500 (8-for-16) with a pair of hits in three of his four games. He also led the team with 10 runs scored while also recording a 1.188 slugging percentage and .550 on-base mark. He totaled five RBI.
 
"Luke had a great week," Head Coach Bill Currier said. "He hit for power and played outstanding defense. He certainly deserves the recognition and hopefully keeps it rolling along like he's been doing lately."
 
Alekson earned his third MAAC Pitcher of the Week award this season and the fourth of his career after tossing seven shutout innings in the opener against Merrimack while tying a career-high with eight strikeouts. He allowed just three hits and two walks in his outing. For the season, he is tied for the MAAC lead with six wins while placing second with a 2.59 ERA. He was also one of 54 pitchers in the country named to the National Pitcher of the Year Watch List.
 
"Ben has been our most consistent starter all year long," Coach Currier said. "He pitches very efficiently by mixing three speeds and does a great job going in and out and up and down with the opponent."
 
The duo has helped the Stags to 29 wins this season and a league-best 16-2 mark in the conference.
