Stags Top The Pioneers, 6-1

Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn.-The Fairfield University men's tennis team used strong singles' play on Saturday to earn a 6-1 home win over local rival Sacred Heart University in the squad's 2025 regular season finale.  With the win, Fairfield heads into next weekend's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at 9-8 overall and 5-3 conference play.  SHU is now 4-13 overall and 2-6 in the MAAC.

After dropping the doubles' point, the Stags came out on fire in singles' action posting four consecutive, straight sets victories to clinch the match over the Pioneers.

Sam Hodges got things started with a 6-2, 6-2 win at number one.

Kostas Kollias followed suit with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at number three.

Luca Benaibbouche continued the momentum with a 6-4, 6-4 win at number four, and Alex Aguiar wrapped things up for the host team with 6-1, 7-5 victory at number six.

With the match clinched, Fairfield completed the singles' sweep to win the match by a 6-1 score, as Calum Jessett prevailed in a three-set, superbreaker at number two, 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (13-11); as did Domagoj Stabek at number five, 7-5, 6-7, 1-0 (10-5).

Head coach Jeff Bricker was pleased with the Stags' effort in this season's regular season finale saying, "It's nice to go into the postseason with some momentum! We came out sluggish but turned it around during the singles. We need this next week to try to get healthy, but I like where we are at heading into the MAAC Championship."

Up next, the Stags will be in action at the six-team, MAAC Men's Tennis Championship that will take place next weekend from April 25-27 at the Mercer County Park Tennis Center in West Windsor, New Jersey.  Fairfield will enter the MAAC Championship as the number three seed and face sixth-seed Rider at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 25.
