Box Score STORRS, Conn. -- The Fairfield University softball team returned to non-conference play with a single game against the University of Connecticut, falling by a 9-0 score on the road.
The Stags managed a couple of hits against Huskies starting pitcher Hope Jenkins, a third inning bunt single by
Morgan Sylvestre and a fourth-inning single by
Ava Armuth. Sylvestre's base hit gave Fairfield its first base runner of the game after Jenkins retired the first eight batters she faced. Armuth's single was part of a fourth-inning rally that saw the Stags place a couple of runners on base in the frame, beginning with a lead off walk from
Delaney Whieldon.
Anna Paravati switched places with Whieldon following a fielder's choice, setting up Armuth's single that put runners on first and second base. The next two Fairfield hitters were retired on a ground out and a fly ball to end the Stags' threat.
UConn scored multiple runs in each of the first three innings and posted at least one run in all four innings in which the Huskies stepped into the batter's box. In the first inning, a couple of walks and a base hit loaded the bases, setting up an infield hit that combined with an infield misplay to plate two runs.
The Huskies tacked on four more runs in the second inning, all of which came with two outs. After lead off hit batter set up the rally, starting pitcher
Chela Kovar retired the next two hitters. UConn struck quickly after those two outs, starting with a two-run homer from Grace Jenkins to double up the advantage at 4-0. The home team tacked on two more runs with back-to-back doubles and a base hit to bring the score to 6-0 after two innings.
The third inning brought two more runs UConn's way with a pair of RBI singles from Lexi Hastings and Rosie Garcia that pushed the score to 8-0. The final run of the game came in the fourth inning off an infield single from Haley Coupal.
Kovar pitched the first two innings of the game, striking out three batters and scattering seven hits.
Grace Conrad entered the game for the next two innings, giving up three runs off seven hits.
The Fairfield University softball team will have the weekend off from Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play before returning to the conference schedule with a Tuesday doubleheader at Siena College on April 22. The team finishes out the week with its final home weekend of the 2025 regular season, hosting Saint Peter's University for Saturday doubleheader followed by a single game on Sunday.
