Men's Soccer Improves Unbeaten Streak To Five Games With Manhattan Win

BRONX, N.Y. – The Fairfield University men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to five games with tonight's 1-0 win over Manhattan University. The Stags have won two matches and played to three draws over the current streak.

As has been the case for most of this run, a late goal was the difference in the result. Fairfield scored the game's only goal in the 85th minute after an offensive flurry that resulted in a corner kick.
William Pierce started the offensive set with a shot in the 82nd minute that was blocked. Shortly after, the Stags retained possession and moved the ball forward toward goal. This time, Illia Tyrkus sent the ball toward goal but it skidded just past the near post and resulted in a goal kick.

A minute later, Fairfield was awarded a free kick at the 83:44 mark which set up a shot from Ethan Prescott, but again the Manhattan back line was able to deflect the ball before it became too dangerous.
However, the clearing presented Fairfield with a corner kick which was taken by Auden Engen Vik. He quickly sent the ball into the middle of the box where Sean Albritton rose above his defender and sent the ball to the back of the goal with a header.

With about six minutes remaining in the game, Fairfield was able to fend off Manhattan's pressure as the Jaspers tried to find the equalizer. The home team was able to get a couple of chances from long range but both were off target.

Both teams started the game with strong intent as both offenses were able to create multiple opportunities in the game's opening 10 minutes. William Pierce got things going with a pair of shots in the first minute but both were blocked by a Manhattan defender.

The Gaels took control with a pair of shots in the ninth minute but the Stags defenders were able to handle the pressure without yielding anything further. Each goalkeeper was credited with a save in the first half, beginning with Viktor Nikolov's stop of Manhattan's William Fagerberg's attempt in the 12th minute. Manhattan goalkeeper Ludvig Malberg came up with a save off Kaea Rangihaeata's try in the 19th minute.

In the second half, Albritton nearly gave the lead to Fairfield in the 57th minute with a volley from 20 yards away which took a fully-extended save from Malberg. Cameron Gerber and Engen Vik also put shots on goal that required some maintenance from Walberg to keep the game scoreless.

The Stags will return to Lessing Field for its next two games, hosting Mount St. Mary's on Saturday, October 25 and Quinnipiac University on Wednesday, October 29. Fairfield will honor the senior class prior to its match with Mount St. Mary's.
