FAIRFIELD, Conn. – For the first time this season, the Fairfield University swimming and diving teams will take to the road for a Saturday dual meet at Providence College. The trip interrupts a run of three home dates over the first four weeks of the season. Being on the road doesn't seem to bother either program as the women's team won three road dual meets while the men's captured a pair of dual meets a year ago.
The programs come off its first dual meet of the season last week with the men upending Bryant University while the women were edged by the Bulldogs. Individually, the Stags performed admirably with both teams producing two multiple-event winners.
For the women, freshman Natasha De Pree garnered three first-place swims, taking the top spot in the 800 free (9:10.05), the 200 free (2:04.80), and the 400 free (4:25.78). Classmate Katie Torrey also garnered a pair of top finishes by recording the best time in the 100 back (1:04.69), and the 200 back (2:18.0).
On the men's side,
Max McMillan and
Balazs Ament were double winners in the Stags' win over Bryant. McMillan captured two backstroke events, taking the top spot in the 100 back with a time of 56.59 and in the 200 back with a time of 2:06.42. Ament came up with the best times in the 100 breast (1:02.93) as well as the 200 breast (2:18.53).
For her effort last weekend, De Pree earned a pair of weekly honors from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The freshman collected the conference's Swimmer of the Week as well as the Rookie of the Week.
Providence opened its season with a non-scoring meet with Robert Williams University. Both the men's and women's programs had multiple winners during the meet. Natalia Robak (100 and 200 free) Bella Lombard (100 and 200 back), and Lauren Wagner (100 breast, 200 breast, and 200 IM) accomplished the task for the women. Gabe Hawkins (100 free, 200 IM), Colin Wolf (100 and 200 back), and Aidan Ochoa (100 and 200 breast) also won a pair of races on the day.
The Fairfield University will return home for one more home date before the end of the semester. The Stags will welcome Marist College for a dual meet with both the men's and women's team. The remainder of the Fall semester schedule includes a quick trip to Fordham University on November 1 as well as the annual trek to the Terrier Invitational hosted by Boston University from November 21-23.
