Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I.-Coming off an outstanding 2024 season that saw the Stags advance to the finals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, the Fairfield University Men's Tennis team opened its 2025 Spring season on Sunday with a hard-fought 6-1 road loss against the Brown University Bears (5-0).
Junior
Kostas Kollias earned the Stags' lone victory on Sunday picking up a three-set triumph at number two singles, 6-7, 6-2, 7-5.
Although the host Bears captured the doubles point to open play on Sunday, all three matches were extremely close with Kollias and
Kacper Krolikowski falling at number one, 5-7;
Andrew Immink and
Luca Benaibbouche being downed at number two, 4-6, and
Zach Whittington and
Alex Aguiar dropping a 6-7 decision at number three doubles, as the tiebreaker went Brown's way, 7-5.
A pair of Stags took their singles matches to the limit in Sunday's season opener, as sophomore
Calum Jessett was defeated in the number three slot, 6-3, 2-6, 4-6, and classmate
Domagoj Stabek, playing at number five, fell in a super breaker, 7-5, 2-6, 0-1 (5-10).
Head coach
Jeff Bricker summed up his team's 2025 opener saying, "The men we battled today but came up a little short at a number of spots. For the first match of the spring, it was a solid effort."
The Stags will return to the court next weekend when they travel to West Point, New York for a pair of matches to be played at the United State Military Academy. Fairfield will face Bucknell next Saturday, February 1 at 5:00 p.m., and then the team will close out the weekend taking on the host Black Knights of Army West Point on Sunday, February 2 at 11:00 a.m.
