Softball Sweeps Siena To Take The Series

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University softball team scored 14 runs off 21 hits to complete a sweep of today's doubleheader with Siena College, winning the first game by a 4-2 count before posting a 10-7 victory in game two.

The Stags did not trail at any point during the two games, having only to overcome a 2-2 tie in the opener. Fairfield opened the scoring with two runs in the third inning with the all the offense coming with two outs. After the first two hitters were retired, Martina Guitierrez kick started the rally with a walk. Charli Warren and Morgan Sylvestre both picked up a single to load the bases. Allie Bridgman provided a two-run double to push Fairfield in the lead, 2-0.

Siena tied the score when Fairfield allowed runs to score on a wild pitch and a fielding error. The deadlock was short live however because Fairfield managed a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to take the lead for good. Bridgman drove a base hit to bring home the team's third run while Cara Kochakian punched a single up the middle to bring the score to 4-2.

Alyssa Weinberg earned the win in relief of starter Bailey Taylor. The sophomore tossed the final three-plus innings to close out the win with five strikeouts and only two hits allowed.

In the second game, the Stags were relentless with their attack, scoring the first 10 runs of the contests and sending base runners across home plate in each of the first five innings. Fairfield grabbed a first-inning lead when Bridgman laced a base hit that chased Warren home for a 1-0 lead. Sylvestre struck again with a two-run single in the second inning that padded the lead to 3-0 in the second, sending Quinn McGonigle and Guitierrez across the plate.

Kochakian was next in line as a run producer, slapping a single up the middle that brought Megan Forbes and Anna Paravati home to increase the Fairfield lead to 5-0 . Forbes was involved in the next Fairfield run as the graduate student collected an RBI single which set up Kochakian's bases-loaded walk to make the score 7-0 after four innings.

Siena finally solved the Stags pitching staff in the fourth inning, touching up the pitchers for five runs off four hits to make the game intriguing at 7-5. Of those four hits in the inning, only one was responsible for runners scoring – a two-run single by Chloe Cummings that plated the first two runs.

Fairfield responded with three more runs in the top of the fifth with all those runs scoring without a base hit. A hit batter sent home a base runner while an error and a walk were run-scoring plays.
The Stags will play six Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) games next week, hosting Manhattan for a three-game set on Tuesday and Wednesday before spending the weekend at Niagara University for another three-game set.
