Softball Splits With Saint Peter's

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Fairfield University softball team put together its best offensive day of the season which set up a split with Saint Peter's University in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader this afternoon. The Stags picked up a 10-2 win in five innings to start the twin bill before seeing the home rally to win the second game in extra innings by a 4-3 count.

Fairfield used strong offensive efforts from Allie Bridgman, Megan Forbes, and Quinn McGonigle to open up the big lead in the opener. All three student-athletes had two hits each with McGonigle joining Delaney Whieldon with three RBI each.

The Stags opened the scoring with a single run in the second inning courtesy of a triple from McGonigle followed by Cara Kochakian's sacrifice fly. The game turned in the third inning as Fairfield managed to push four runs across the plate with McGonigle playing an offensive role with her three-run homer.

Already leading by a 5-0 count, Fairfield doubled up its run total in the fourth inning, the first coming off an infield single from Charli Warren. Bridgman followed with a two-run double while Whieldon increased the lead with her two-run triple which gave her team a 10-0 advantage.

Saint Peter's broke up the shutout try with two runs in the fourth frame as Ashley Murphy Dakota Pitts provided a run-scoring double during the rally. Bailey Taylor was credited with the win after pitching the first three-plus innings before Alyssa Weinberg recorded the final five outs of the game.

The second game was a classic pitcher's dual between Weinberg and Morgan Lipanski. The duo did not allow a run through seven innings before both offenses found their way in the eighth inning.
Martina Guitierrez was responsible for all three of Fairfield's runs in the eighth inning, driving a three-run triple that cleared Whieldon, Danica Silvestri, and Kochakian. All three batters reached without a hit as Whieldon was hit by a pitch and Silvestri and Kochakian each drew a walk.

Saint Peter's tied the game by rallying with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, beginning with Maiah Skakal's double that put runners on second and third bases and ending with Jess Forte's three-run homer that tied the game at 3-3. Forte ended the game in the 10th inning when she launched her second home run of the game, ,a solo shot that closed the scoring at 4-3.

Warren, Morgan Sylvestre, and Whieldon each posted two hits for Fairfield. Weinberg went the distance in the game, giving her better than 11 innings pitched on the afternoon.

Fairfield will welcome Columbia University to Alumni Softball Field on Wednesday, April 3 for its next game. The contest is slated for a 3 pm start.
