POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Caleb Fields recorded his first double-double as a Stag with 15 points and 10 rebounds, but Fairfield University Men's Basketball was on the short side of a 58-55 decision on Friday night at Marist.
Jalen Leach added 13 points in the MAAC setback.
With the loss, Fairfield slides to 18-11 overall and 12-6 in the MAAC. Marist improves to 16-10 on the campaign and 11-6 in conference play. The Stags and Red Foxes split the regular season series, as Fairfield took an 82-61 decision in the Jan. 7 meeting at Mahoney Arena.
"First and foremost, the credit goes to Marist. They did a lot of things to disrupt us and keep the game for the most part at the pace and style that they wanted to play," said Interim Head Coach
Chris Casey. "But there's always things within your control that you could have done better. We'll get back in our practice gym and get back to work and put ourselves in the position to be the team that makes a few more plays next time around."
Fields' 15 points included four three-pointers as he moved to fourth on Fairfield's single-season list with 89 treys on the year. His 10 rebounds match his career high – both previous instances attained while playing at Bowling Green. Fields also distributed a team-leading four assists on the day.
For Leach, the reigning MAAC Player of the Week, his 13 points came alongside six rebounds.
Brycen Goodine was the third Stag in double figures with 10 points off the bench.
Supplementing the scoring,
Louis Bleechmore scored six points,
Jasper Floyd had five,
Alexis Yetna scored three,
Peyton Smith notched two and
Birima Seck had one.
Floyd and Seck each hauled in five rebounds as Fairfield gained a 41-38 advantage on the boards.
Josh Pascarelli led Marist with 13 points. The Red Foxes are 12-0 on the season when holding their opponent to fewer than 60 points. The Stags were held below that mark for just the second time on the campaign (Drexel, 47).
Fairfield Men's Basketball is back in action on Thursday, March 7 for the first-ever nationally televised game at Mahoney Arena when Canisius comes to campus for Senior Night. Opening tip-off on ESPNU is slated for 7 p.m.
