Stags Top Army West Point For First Win Of 2024 Season

Squad Wraps Up Busy Weekend In West Point On Saturday Against Binghampton

WEST POINT, N.Y.-The Fairfield University men's tennis team opened a busy weekend of action at the United States Military Academy on Friday, and the Stags posted their first dual match win of 2024 with a 4-2 triumph over the host Black Knights of Army West Point in the afternoon and completed play for the day later in the evening versus Georgetown University and were defeated by the Hoyas, 4-0. 

In the win over the Blacks Knights, the visitors got off to a fast start by winning the doubles point, as Kostas Kollias and Keean Shah won at number two, 6-4, and Alex Aguiar and Sam Hodges clinched the opening point with a 7-6 victory (7-2 in the tiebreaker) at number three.

The Stags kept the momentum rolling in singles action against Army West Point, as Shah won at number five, 7-5, 6-0; Hodges triumphed in the second flight, 6-3, 6-4, and graduate student Nick Condos clinched the season's first victory with a comeback, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, win in the number three singles' slot.

 "It was a great team win!" head coach Jeff Bricker stated after the Army match. "The doubles point was huge. We came out with great energy and kept it until the end."

With the Friday split, the Stags' overall record is now 1-5, and the Black Knights slip to 3-4 on the young season with Georgetown moving to 3-2 overall.

In Friday's nightcap, Alex Aguiar highlighted singles' play taking his match to a third set before it was halted with the outcome of the contest decided.

Said coach Bricker, "It was a tough one against Georgetown, but they were a very talented team. I like the battle we showed up and down the lineup. We will be ready for Binghamton Saturday."

Up next, Fairfield will wrap up its weekend sojourn to West Point on Saturday afternoon with a 2:00 p.m. match against the Binghamton University Bearcats.
