Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Five members of Fairfield University Men's Tennis were in action on Thursday in the qualifying draw of the ITA New England Regional Championship hosted by Harvard.
Luca Benaibbouche and
Kostas Kollias highlighted the day with singles wins to reach the Round of 32.
Benaibbouche upended Brown's Sam Feldman in straight sets – 6-3, 6-4 – in the Round of 64. The sophomore fell in the next round to seventh-seeded Hikaru Takeda of Dartmouth – 6-1, 6-4.
Kollias reached the Round of 32 with a 6-2, 7-5 triumph over Zino Varouhas-Poole of Siena. His singles run was ended by 16th-seed Walker Oberg of Yale – 6-2, 6-4.
Three other Stags competed in the qualifying draw.
Calum Jessett,
Alex Aguiar and
Sam Hodges each went to a third set in their respective matches before bowing out in the Round of 64.
Jessett and Aguiar both won a consolation match later in the day. Jessett topped Charles Robertson of Merrimack in two marathon sets – 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2). Aguiar played his second three-set clash of the day, taking a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) decision from Kareem Ansari of Harvard.
Friday's action from Cambridge will feature
Kacper Krolikowski in the main singles draw. The rookie Stag challenges Peter Hatton of Le Moyne in the Round of 64 at approximately 1:45 p.m.
The doubles teams of Hodges and Krolikowski, Benaibbouche and
Will O'Brien, and Kollias and Aguiar will also all compete on Friday.
