Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Stags Outlast Manhattan, 82-75, for Third Straight Win

Fields nets 25 points, Leach goes for 23 in MAAC road victory

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Fairfield University Men's Basketball knocked down 15 three-pointers on a season-best .556 shooting from beyond the arc to outlast host Manhattan, 82-75, on Sunday afternoon at Draddy Gymnasium. Caleb Fields had five of the Stags' 15 triples en route to a game-high 25 points.

Winners of their third straight game and 11 of their last 12, the Stags stand at 12-7 overall and 6-2 in the MAAC. The Jaspers drop their ninth consecutive contest to slip to 4-12 on the season with a 1-6 conference mark.

"Winning on the road is the hardest thing to do in college basketball. Manhattan kept coming at us, but we never lost our confidence or composure. We made big shots, we got the stops and rebounds that we needed, and Caleb and Jasper made their free throws to close it out," said Interim Head Coach Chris Casey. "Just like any other game, we'll take away some things from today that we can improve upon. But I'm proud of our guys for coming into a tough place to play and heading back home with a win."

In addition to five three-pointers, Fields also went 4-for-4 from the stripe in the game's final 36 seconds to help ice the win as Manhattan climbed back to within two points down the stretch.

Two days after scoring a career-high 29 points in Friday's win over Saint Peter's, Jalen Leach hit four treys and shot 9-for-18 from the field overall to pour in 23 in the victory. Brycen Goodine was the third Stag in double figures, canning his third and final triple as a dagger in the closing seconds en route to 13 points.

A total of eight Stags chipped into the scoring as Peyton Smith had seven points, Jasper Floyd scored five, Birima Seck netted four, Jack Brown tallied three and James Johns Jr. had two. Floyd also dished out a game-best eight assists as Fairfield assisted on 21 of its 30 field goals.

The rebounding battle was tied at 38-38, with Smith leading the Fairfield effort with nine rebounds. Fields corralled six board and Johns Jr. added five.

On the defensive end, Leach had five steals as Fairfield pressured Manhattan into 14 turnovers. Smith added two steals and two blocks. Fairfield only committed eight turnovers – its fifth time with single-digit giveaways this season.

Manhattan was led by 21 points for Shaquil Bender. Seydou Traore was just shy of a double-double for the Jaspers with nine points and 12 rebounds.

Fairfield returns to action and returns to Leo D. Mahoney Arena on Sunday, Jan. 28 to host in-state MAAC foe Quinnipiac. The Bobcats are 13-4 overall and 6-1 in the conference after rallying to knock off Iona, 91-87, today in Hamden. QU will host The Mount on Thursday before trekking down to Fairfield for Sunday's matinee. Tickets are on sale now at FairfieldStags.com/TIX.
