JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Fairfield University softball team built a lead in both ends of today's doubleheader with Saint Peter's University only to see the Peacocks come-from-behind in the two games and complete a sweep of this Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader.
The Stags outhit their host in the first and second games, accumulating 18 hits in the twin bill including 10 in the night cap. But a four-inning two-run rally in the opener and a walk-off three-run homer in the following game resulted in Saint Peter's taking the results.
Charli Warren,
Megan Forbes,
Haley Updegraff, and
Anna Paravati each picked up a hit in both games with Warren, Forbes, and Paravati finishing with three hits each in the doubleheader.
In the second game, Fairfield scored a second-inning run that seemed stood up for nearly the entire game. Updegraff was nearly single-handedly responsible for the run, starting with a single, taking second on a stolen base, advancing to third on a ground out, and scoring on a wild pitch. The Stags scratched a second run in the sixth inning with Paravati's infield single starting the rally.
Ella Watson stepped onto the base paths as pinch runner and promptly took second off a sacrifice bunt. A ground out sent Watson to third base, setting up the run following a misplayed ball in the infield. Saint Peter's finally broke through off starter
Alyssa Weinberg with four hits and a couple of walks which resulted in four runs to give the Peacocks their first lead of the game.
The Stags battled back with three runs of their own in the top of the seventh inning with Forbes leading off with a double and Hoffman adding a single to put runners on the corners. Paravati drove a double left field that brought both runners home to tie the score at 4-4.
Allie Bridgman and Robicheau followed with consecutive sacrifice flies that added two more runs to the team's total.
Saint Peter's caught a break when the lead off batter reached on an error but Weinberg sent down the next two hitters on strikeouts. A single to right field followed and put the tying runs on base for Tai Turner. The freshman launched a three-run homer to center field to provide Saint Peter's with the walk-off win.
In the opening game, the home team grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first inning before the Stags tallied a run in the second and third innings to take a 2-1 lead. Updegraff brought home the first run with a sacrifice fly which Hoffman followed with another fly ball which produced the second run. After Saint Peter's tied the game in the bottom of the third inning, the Stags added one more run to its ledger after Updegraff singled, stole second, and ran home off Bridgman's RBI single to right field. The Peacocks used a two-run single in the fourth to take the lead for good at 4-3.
Fairfield finishes up the regular season with five home games next week beginning with a single game against Army West Point on Wednesday, May 3. The weekend brings a pair of MAAC doubleheaders to Alumni Softball Field beginning with Siena on Friday, May 5 and ending with Marist on Saturday, May 6.
