FAIRFIELD, Conn. – It would be hard for a pitching staff to be more dominant than the Stags were today as the three pitchers combined to allow just one run in Fairfield University's sweep of the University of Hartford in a softball doubleheader.
Samantha Lindsay and
Bailey Taylor combined for the 8-0 shutout in game one while
Alyssa Weinberg went the distance in a 7-1 decision in game two.
Weinberg's complete game performance was more than impressive as the freshman fanned 15 hitters as the Hawks managed to put nine balls in play during the game – four fly outs, two ground outs, and three hits. After the first three Hartford hitters were retired on two balls to the outfield and an infield pop-up, Weinberg managed to tally strikeouts for 15 of the final 18 outs recorded.
"All of my pitches were working today, more than they have over the last couple of weeks," Weinberg said. "My confidence was up as the game progressed and I really wanted to get the complete game."
Confidence was evident to Head Coach
Julie Brzezinski as well as she saw a difference in the way Weinberg carried herself in the pitching circle this afternoon.
"I think she felt extremely confident and she kept getting better and better as the innings continued," Brzezinski said. "Alyssa did a good job of overpowering Hartford with movement. She can do that every outing and I think she'll realize that as she gets more experience but it's all about confidence for her. If she is confident, she can throw the ball and dominate."
Lindsay was also on top of the Hartford hitters through her five innings in the circle to start the game. The senior scattered four hits and was able to pitch out of any danger in a couple of instance when the Hawks managed to string together a few base runners.
Most notably, Hartford's biggest threat came in the fifth inning when the lineup started a two-out rally with a single and two walks before Lindsay induced a fly ball to end the inning.
Bailey Taylor came in the game for the sixth inning, which turned out to be the final inning as the Stags plated enough runs to end the game at 8-0.
While the pitchers kept Hartford off balance, several Fairfield hitters found their stroke in the twin bill.
Kaitlin Hoffman had three hits and five RBI along with two runs scored in the two games, highlighted by a bases-clearing doubles that one-hopped the center field fence.
Delaney Whieldon also put together two hits in both ends of the doubleheader and added three RBI and scored three times.
Charli Warren put together a three-hit day, touching home plate three times and driving in one base runner.
Haley Updegraff added two hits and an RBI during the afternoon as well.
The Stags continue their busy week that includes five games over a five-day stretch. The schedule keeps Fairfield at Alumni Softball Field on Wednesday for a single game with Sacred Heart University, the third time the two teams will meet this season. The week concludes with a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader at Saint Peter's University on Saturday.
