LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA. - At six shots under par after 54 holes, Fairfield University men's golf senior Killian McGinley led the 45-player field this weekend to win the individual title at the 2023 MAAC Championships.
McGinley won the tournament by one stroke over The Mount's Hank Schaefer, as he becomes the sixth player in program history to win the McLeod Trophy, and the first Stag since 2014. Opening the tournament at four under par, he would card an impressive 65 in Saturday's second round to help build AAB eight-stroke lead into the final round.
Alongside McGinley's individual title, the Stags also secured a second-place finish as a team, with the entirety of the Fairfield Five placing 24th or better. Jason Salameno saw a steady first two days at Disney's Palm Golf Course as he carded a pair of 74s before shooting one under par in the final round to finish with a share of 11th place. Two shots back of him, Patrick McCarthy notched consecutive plus-two rounds for himself as well to open the championships, and with a 73 Sunday completed the weekend in a tie for 18th place.
Two shots further back sat Shane DeVincenzo who would also score his best round of the tournament Sunday, shooting one over to finish tied for 21st, with Michael McCarthy in share of 24th at nine-over to round out the Stags' lineup. Siena would win the tournament, taking a big lead during the final round.
The Stags end the year as a unit having earned a team victory during the regular season alongside a pair of individual wins prior to McGinley's hoisting of the McLeod Trophy this afternoon. McGinley advances to May's NCAA Regionals. He will learn his destination on Wednesday, May 3.
