FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Freshman
Quinn McGonigle stepped into the batter's box with the game on the line – runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning of a scoreless game. The outfielder picked the perfect moment to record her first collegiate RBI, sending a sacrifice fly to right field that led the Fairfield University softball team to a 1-0 win over St. John's University in a non-conference contest.
"We just needed Quinn to loft the ball to the outfield because we had enough speed at third to score the run," Head Coach
Julie Brzezinski said. "She did her job well and swung the bat with confidence which resulted in the RBI."
The 1-0 final score fell under the definition of pitcher's duel but the box score did not meet the tradition as six pitchers saw action between the two teams. Fairfield went with a staff day that saw
Allie Bridgman get the start and pitch two innings before yielding to
Alyssa Weinberg who also tossed a pair of innings.
Bailey Taylor entered the game next and eventually gave way to winning pitcher
Samantha Lindsay.
St. John's used a pair of hurlers in Carolina Zamudio and Ana Serafinko to account for its six innings in the field.
"I don't think I've been part of a pitcher's duel that included six pitchers," Brzezinski said. "We know that we were going to pitch by committee today just get everyone some time and work in a light week. They all did their job and we picked up a lot of lead off outs which is our always our goal throughout the seven innings that we play."
Both teams created opportunities to score throughout the game as the two squads combined for 14 runners left on base. St. John's stranded eight base runners including two in its first at-bat and three more in the top of the fifth inning. The Stags left six runners on the paths, half of which came in a bases-loaded chance in the second inning.
It was not until the bottom of the sixth that the scoreboard finally showed some offense, a rally that started with two walks to
Delaney Whieldon and
Megan Forbes to start the inning.
Kasey Sekula pushed a perfect bunt to the right side that allowed Whieldon and Forbes to move up a base, putting runners on second and third.
The Stags attempted a squeeze play with McGonigle at the plate and the freshman had to lunge across the plate to foul off an outside pitch to protect the oncoming runner. On the next pitch, the freshman drove the ball to right field that brought home Whieldon to put the Stags in front.
The victory sets up the Stags as they head back to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play on Saturday, hosting Iona University for a doubleheader at Alumni Softball Field. The game is slated for a 12 pm start.
Also of note, the Fairfield University-Yale University game that was scheduled for Thursday, April 20 has been canceled.
