HELLERTOWN, PA. – A blazing start to the ABARTA Coca-Cola Invitational saw Killian McGinley shoot to the top of the leaderboard where he would stay throughout the final round en route to a first-place finish in the 103-golfer field and lead the Fairfield University men's golf team in its final tournament of the regular season.
McGinley opened the tournament with a six-under 66 which was highlighted by an impressive four birdies through his first nine holes. On day two, he would shoot two under par on the Par-72 course at Northampton Country Club to win the tournament with a four-stroke lead, claiming his first collegiate victory and matching the lowest 36-hole score by a Stag since Steve Burak during the 2014-15 season.
In addition to McGinley's victory, Patrick McCarthy nabbed a share of 15th place in the field as he stayed within par range throughout the two days, carding an even round Sunday before a one-over, 73 this afternoon to help Fairfield earn a share of second place in the 18 school field. Lehigh would win the tournament at six under, followed by Colgate who finished alongside the Stags, ahead of a trio of MAAC schools in succession in Iona, Rider and Mount St. Mary's to pace the top third of the field.
Finishing third was Michael McCarthy who also had a hot start as he opened with a one under, 71 to kickoff the tournament, finishing in a share of 31st, followed by Shane DeVincenzo in a tie for 43rd after shooting one over par in the opening round. Jason Salameno rounded out the Fairfield quintet while Chase Millar competing as an individual completed the Stags' efforts after a two-stroke improvement across the two rounds.
Fairfield men's golf now turns its attention to this weekend's 2023 MAAC Championships, which begin Friday with the first of three days of action from the Palm Course at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
