FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team will play in a split three-game series with Hartford this weekend. The series begins with a 3 p.m. clash at Alumni Diamond on Friday, April 14 and concludes with an 11 a.m. doubleheader at Hartford' Fiondella Field on Saturday at 11 a.m. The weekend series marks the bye week in the Stags' MAAC schedule, who will compete against conference squads for the final five weekends of the regular season leading up to the MAAC Championship on Memorial Day Weekend at Clover Stadium.
Fairfield is coming off a 13-3 midweek win against Quinnipiac, marking the 15th time this season they have scored double digit runs. Fairfield is averaging a MAAC-best 8.9 runs per game, ranking 17th in the nation. Their .314 batting average and .540 slugging percentage also rank in the top-20 in the country.
Charlie Pagliarini and
Mike Becchetti have been two of the highlights on the offensive front, with both student-athletes ranking number one and two in the MAAC in homers. Pagliarini has crushed 12 homers this year, one shy of tying the program's single season record which was set by Justin Guerrera in 2021 and tied by Pagliarini last year. Becchetti also launched his 10th homer of the season in the win over Quinnipiac and the two are the only duo in the MAAC to both have double-digit homers.
Becchetti is also the conference's hits leader with 49 and also recorded his 150th career hit last week.
Noah Lucier, however, was the biggest bright spot in Fairfield's win over Quinnipiac with a perfect 5-for-5 showing. Lucier now leads the MAAC with 11 doubles.
The trio are also part of a group of seven Stags to have a batting average over .300.
Matt Bucciero (.345),
Matt Bergevin (.337),
Mike Handal (.317), and
Griffin Watson (.300) round out the group.
The series against Hartford can also be historic for Head Coach
Bill Currier, who enters play with 798 career wins. He ranks 26th among active Division I coaches. He will become the 132nd coach in NCAA history with over 800 victories. Currier has amassed 306 wins at Fairfield after winning 492 at Vermont during his 34-year career.
Hartford enters play with a 2-21 overall record. Noah Rivera is the team's leading hitter with a .268 average and 10 RBI.
The Stags will be on the road for their next midweek game, traveling to Hofstra on Wednesday at 3pm.
