BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Both Fairfield University swimming and diving teams kept their position in the team standings of the 2023 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships after completion of Day 3. The women remained in the top spot with 409 points while the men stayed in fourth place with 384 points. The final day of the competition begins with preliminaries at 10 am while the finals are slated for a 3 pm start.
The women placed three individuals in the top three of their respective events with
Erini Pappas winning the 400 IM title by completing the course in a school record time of 4:24.05 and
Sydney Scalise taking the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:53.06.
Erin Hoyland completed the top three finishes for the women by touching the wall third (4:28.35) in the 400 IM.
Callie Gray rounded out the top four in the 400 IM by taking fourth place in 4:30.18.
Lily Barker was the next Stag to finish in the 200 freestyle, garnering fourth with a time of 1:53.96.
The men also secured three individual top three finishes with
Ed Hunt (3:57.38) and
Evan Fair (3:57.66) took second and third place in the 400 IM while
Joseph Stewart garnered third place in the 200 freestyle by completing the distance in 1:38.26.
Tim Regan took sixth place in the 200 freestyle with his time of 1:39.82.
Day 3 began with the 100 fly as
Alexandra Miko-Rydzaj (58.20) and
Maggie O'Donnell (58.45) represented the women's program while Nick Besgen (50.47) and
Alexey Belfer (50.57) entered the event for the men. The Stags scored points off
Cailey Stockwell's fourth-place swim in the 100 breaststroke, taking the distance in 1:04.91.
Alison Sposili earned ninth place after finishing the event in 1:05.41.
Chris Ford was the men's top finisher in the 100 breaststroke with his time of 55.02.
Two women collected top 10 finishes in the 100 back as
Serafina Viola (57.36) was sixth followed by
Holly Rahurahu in 10th place (58.66).
Oliver McLaughlin was the first to touch the wall for the Stags in the 100 back as his time of 50.64 was strong enough for seventh place.
Patrick Gill also performed in the 100 back and ended his swim in 51.33.
In 3-meter diving,
Samuel Tonole took fourth place by scoring 226.05 points while teammate
Noah Duncan garnered seventh place with 209.90 points. The day concluded with the 400 medley relay as both the men and women grabbed second place. The men set a school standard by combining for a time of 3:19.19 behind the efforts of McLaughlin,
Chris Ford, Fair, and Belfer. The women completed the distance in 3:49.28 as Pappas, Stockwell, Miko-Rydzaj, and Scalise comprised the relay team.Â
