FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Caleb Fields scored a career-high 27 points to lead Fairfield University Men's Basketball to a 78-72 win over visiting Le Moyne on Saturday afternoon at Leo D. Mahoney Arena. The win is the sixth straight victory for the Stags – their longest since the 2017-18 campaign.
With the home triumph, the Stags round out the 2023 calendar year and cap the non-conference slate with a 7-6 mark. Fairfield's last six-game winning streak was a seven-game stretch in total, spanning the last four games of the 2017-18 regular season as well as the Stags' three-game postseason run to the MAAC Championship Game. Le Moyne falls to 5-9 on the campaign.
Fields' 27 points – the most in a game by a Stag this season – surpassed his previous career high of 24 points established exactly five years ago on Dec. 30, 2018 at UT Martin in Fields' freshman season at Bowling Green. In today's game, he knocked down four three-pointers and canned all seven of his free throw attempts to fuel his 27-point day and also tallied five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
"Today was another example of winning different games in different ways. This was Caleb's game, and he had a great veteran performance – he made some big shots, he made his free throws and he defended," said Interim Head Coach
Chris Casey. "The biggest thing that every game has had in common is that regardless of who stands out on the statsheet as 'the guy' on a given night, it has taken contributions from everyone for us to be successful."
Jasper Floyd joined Fields in double figures with 13 points and led all players with 10 rebounds to cap his first career double-double. He added five assists and five steals – only the fourth player in the nation this season to record a "points-rebounds" double-double and also tally five helpers and five steals in a game.
Rounding out a balanced effort,
Brycen Goodine added 12 points,
Peyton Smith scored eight,
Jalen Leach had seven,
Louis Bleechmore scored six,
Birima Seck netted three and
James Johns Jr. scored a pair.
Defensively, the Stags forced 20 Le Moyne turnovers and converted them into 23 points. Floyd's five steals, Leach's four and Fields' three provided the live-ball turnovers that turned into Fairfield offense on the other end.
In addition to Floyd's 10 rebounds, Bleechmore collected seven and Fields had five as the Stags gained a 38-34 advantage on the glass.
Le Moyne was led by 16 points apiece from Ocypher Owens and Luke Sutherland.
The start of 2024 marks a return to MAAC play for the Stags. Fairfield – 1-1 in the MAAC as a part of its 7-6 overall record – will visit Siena on Friday, Jan. 5 and host Marist on Sunday, Jan. 7 at Mahoney Arena.
The Saints are 2-11 overall and 1-1 in the MAAC after a 79-66 loss at UMass today.
