Nethercott Tops Leaderboard as Stags Take Home Share of the Title at Hartford Invitational

The Stags were named Co-Champions alongside Merrimack, while Nethercott claims the players' title by six strokes

BLOOMFIELD, Conn. – Sydney Nethercott put on a dominating performance Monday at Wintonbury Hills Golf Course, leading the field by five strokes after day one, and saw that lead to a six-stroke advantage after 36-holes Sunday, to win the Hartford Hawks Fall Invitational. Nethercott was one of four Stags to finish amongst the Top-25 in the field, helping Fairfield University women's golf claim a share of the team title alongside Merrimack College.

"I am extremely proud of the team and how they battled these past few days," said Director of men's and women's golf Doug Holub. "Fighting illness and the weather, they showed the strength that I always know they have. This win is a product of consistent effort and will as they continue to push us towards accomplishing the goals that we have set."

The Par-70 layout at Wintonbury Hills was easily picked up by Nethercott, who after the opening round sat atop the leaderboard at even for the day, the only player to shoot better than three over par in either round during a treacherous handful of days. She would shoot six over in the final round Tuesday, tied for the third best score of the afternoon, and six shots ahead of the second-place finisher from UAlbany.

Addy Douglas kept position within the top-10 players in the 59-golfer field throughout the weekend, carding a 77 in the opening round, and would only fall off by one shot on Tuesday in increasingly difficult conditions, to finish tied for ninth overall. The third and fourth finishers for Fairfield were Grace Kryscio and Julia Towne, who each improved on their scores from day one to day two, as the pair finished tied with one another for 19th place at +17 overall. Kryscio would shoot an 81 in the opening round before an impressive five-shot jump on day two where she finished just six over par, while Towne carded a 79 on Monday before getting her score down to a 78 in the final round.

Katelynn Waclawski was the final member of the Fairfield Five this week, with the freshman carding an 83 in the third round of her collegiate career, before bouncing back on day two with a two-stroke improvement to finish 35th in the field. Serving as the lone individual for the Stags carded a day two score six strokes better than her opening round tally to finish 48th to round out the second competition of the season for the squad.

Fairfield women's golf is back in action this Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 10-11 for the Quinnipiac Classic in Wallingford, Conn.
