Matt Merullo Named Baseball Volunteer Assistant Coach

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball program has announced the hiring of Matt Merullo as the team's volunteer assistant coach. Merullo brings 25 years of experience in professional baseball to the Stags in a variety of avenues as a player, manager and scout.

"We feel very fortunate to have such an experienced coach on our Fairfield baseball staff," Head Coach Bill Currier said. "As a former MLB catcher, minor league manager, and scout, I feel our players will benefit by Coach Merullo included on our staff."

A baseball lifer, Merullo has spent 25 years inside the baseball world in a variety of avenues. As the Northeast Area Scouting Supervisor for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Merullo has helped sign over 50 players to professional contracts in his 12 years.

Merullo has also spent time as a professional baseball manager, heading the Aberdeen Ironbirds, the Short Season Single A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, for two seasons. He led Aberdeen to the New York-Penn League McNamara Division Championship, the first ever division championship in Aberdeen history.

As a player, Merullo was drafted in the seventh round out of the University in North Carolina in 1986 by the Chicago White Sox. He spent six seasons in the big leagues as a catcher and first baseman, amassing 116 hits for the White Sox, Indians, and Twins. He led the American League with 47 pinch hits in 1991, including a ninth inning game-tying two out pinch hit homer against the Boston Red Sox.

Most recently, Merullo is a partner and director of instruction at BatterUp! In Guilford, Conn. He was also inducted into the Fairfield Prep Hall of Fame in 2020.

Merullo joins a Fairfield baseball program coming off the best season in school history as the Stags were the nation's last remaining unbeaten team after winning 28-straight games to begin the season. Fairfield would finish with the best regular season winning percentage in NCAA Division I history with a 33-1 mark. The Stags earned the MAAC's first-ever At-Large bid into the NCAA Regionals and won the first two regional games in program history, including a victory over nationally ranked Arizona State.
