Men's Soccer Heads To Stony Brook For Saturday Night Match

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's soccer team will play the first of two road games on Saturday night as the Stags travel to Stony Brook University for a 6 pm game. The swing will continue next Wednesday when the team plays at Princeton University at 7 pm.

Head Coach Carl Rees watched his squad play to a 2-2 draw with Army West Point in the last game, the second straight game in which the Stags have netted a pair of goals. The Stags also accomplished the task in a 3-2 setback to Yale University in the home opener.

The Stags resurgence offensively has come from several sources with Jonathan Filipe pacing the front line with a goal and two assists. The senior played a role in three of the team's four goals scored in the two-game home stand, scoring his goal against Yale. Thomas Drillien picked up a pair of goals in the draw with Army West Point, tying him with for the team lead in total points. Rasmus Sorensen Rejnhold posted the team's other goal during the two-game run at Lessing Field.

"The combination of Rasmus, Thomas, and Jonathan have been very good," Coach Rees said. "It's been effective all season. The supporting cast including the reinforcement at midfield have been good as well. We have competed in every game. These have been one-goal games against difficult opposition."

The competition should not relent this Saturday as Stony Brook welcomes Fairfield to campus. The Seawolves have won three of their four decisions this year including the last two contests. The team posted a 1-0 win against Columbia in its last outing on the strength of Gabriel Fernandes.

The Seawolves have scored five goals with five student-athletes scoring one goal each. Edmond Kaiser has excelled in goal for Stony Brook, sporting a 0.72 ERA with a .769 save percentage.

"Stony Brook has great pace offensively, so we have to balance our risk and safety so that we create chances but also be careful not to commit individual errors which we have been guilty of this year," Coach Rees said.

Fairfield and Stony Brook have met twice since the 2011 season with the Seawolves winning the 2011 meeting and the two times playing to a 2-2 tie at Lessing Field in 2019. Daniel Raimondo tied the score at 1-1 in the 59th minute, followed by Fernando Robayo's tying goal in the 75th minute. In the first meeting, Jon Clements gave the Stags a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute before Stony Brook answered with four straight goals to win the game.
