Box Score 1 FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team scored early and often in their first road game of the season, defeating Saint Peter's 20-2 in the opener and winning the nightcap by forfeit to extend their perfect record to 22-0.
Nine different Stags recorded a hit and nine players drove in a run as the Stags put across 20 runs on 17 hits.
"It's good to have the whole team part of our success," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "Everybody feels better about everyone who gets to play especially some who haven't played yet.
Peter Ostensen was very good on the mound."
The Stags scored seven of those runs in the very first frame, highlighted by a
Justin Guerrera two-run shot. The round tripper extended Guerrera's MAAC lead to nine and was the beginning of his five RBI day. He also launched a sacrifice fly in the fourth and recorded a two run single in the fifth.
Charlie Pagliarini and
Mike Handal followed with two run singles to open up the scoring in the first frame and
Griffin Watson capped the scoring as he stole home as Saint Peter's threw to second with Handal taking off to second.
The Stags would add four runs in the second, one in the third, two in the fourth, and three in the fifth and seventh innings.
Watson would come to bat again in the second and would drive home two runs with a single, which would be followed by a
Dan Ryan two run single.
Mike Caruso would add a RBI single in the third to push the score to 12-0.
Sean Cullen would launch a RBI double in the fourth and a two run double in the seventh.
Giacomo Brancato would finish the scoring for the Stags with a RBI single in the seventh.
That would be plenty of enough runs for the Stags pitching as
Nick Grabek and
Peter Ostensen combined for five shutout innings and one hit innings. The duo combined for six strikeouts with Ostensen picking up four in three innings.
Handal and Cullen led the Stags with three hits apiece with Ryan, Guerrera, Pagliarini, and Watson each recorded multiple hits.
Fairfield extends the longest winning streak in the nation to 23-straight games dating back to last season, including a perfect 22-0 mark this season. With their 17 hits, the Stags boosted their team batting average to .322.
Fairfield, the top ranked team in the national in RPI, will stay on the road when they head to Manhattan for a four game series with the Jaspers that will now begin with a doubleheader on Friday at noon.
