Stags Earn Top Spot in NEIBA Poll

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team has been ranked as the top team in New England in the most recent New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) poll. The Stags, who support a perfect 14-0 record heading into Wednesday, have also been ranked as the number two team in the national RPI rankings after their successful start.

"It's always nice to be voted by other coaches in New England where they think you rate among the other schools," Head Coach Bill Currier said. "But it is April 13th and it would be much more meaningful to have that number one ranking at the end of May. We're excited where we're at, we're doing well, we're trying to keep our heads down and working hard and making sure we're doing the kind of things we need to do to stay successful."

The Stags earned 10 points in the poll and rank ahead of: UConn, Northeastern, Bryant, Central Connecticut State, and Maine respectively.

Fairfield remains the only unbeaten team in Division I after a four-game sweep of Rider brought their record to 14-0. Fairfield allowed just three runs combined in the four game series, lowering their team ERA to 2.17, claiming the top spot in the country. The Stags also support the nation's lowest WHIP at 0.94, the only team currently under 1.00.

Along  with their pitching rankings, the Stags rank among the nation's best at the plate. Fairfield is in the top-three in the country in: batting average (.336), slugging percentage (.547), and on-base-percentage (.432).

That success on the mound and at the plate have helped the Stags reach the number two spot in the most recent RPI rankings, with only the number one ranked team in NCAA, Arkansas ranked ahead.

The Stags will look to continue that momentum when they host in-state rival Quinnipiac on Wednesday for a noon doubleheader.
