FAIRFIELD, Conn. – After an historic opening weekend that included the program's third-ever three home run game, Fairfield infielder
Justin Guerrera was ranked among the nation's best as the junior was named a Collegiate Baseball's National Player of the Week and customarily was also named the MAAC Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
"It's an honor to have been named for these awards," Guerrera said. "I'm humbled to be named along with some of the most talented players in the country. After the shortened season in 2020, its great to finally be out there and competing again/ We've put in a lot of work to prepare for this season and I think it is starting to pay off."
Guerrera batted .533, going 8-for-15 with nine RBI and seven runs scored, of course highlighted by blasting four homers in the four-game sweep. In Saturday's nightcap, Guerrera became the third Stag ever to hit three homers in a game and helping the Stags to a 13-4 victory over the Golden Griffs.
Guerrera recorded at least one hit in each of the four games, ending the series with a 3-for-4 showing in the 8-0 win. He also scored a run in each contest, tallied an OPS of 1.988, and led the team with three stolen bases.
Guerrera becomes the fourth Stag to receive national recognition from Collegiate Baseball, as Jake Salpietro,
John Signore, and
Trey McLoughlin all received past honors. The junior was also one of four candidates for the #GoldenSpikes Performance of the Week on the Golden Spikes official Twitter account.
Guerrera's national and conference weekly award winning effort, helped the Stags to their best start in their 70-year program history as they started the campaign with a 4-0 record.
The Stags will look to build on that success with a four-game series at Saint Peter's starting on Saturday at noon.
