Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Overtime Clash Goes to UMass, 77-73, to Snap Stags’ Five-Game Streak

Allan Jeanne-Rose nets career-high 21 points, Supreme Cook posts a double-double

AMHERST, Mass. – Fairfield University Men's Basketball got a career-high 21 points from Allan Jeanne-Rose and a double-double from Supreme Cook, but host UMass went on the game's final run to force overtime and then pull out the decision in the extra session, 77-73, on Sunday at the Mullins Center.

The win snaps a five-game winning streak overall and four-game road win streak for Fairfield (8-4). The Minutemen move to 7-5 overall and a perfect 6-0 on their home court.

"I give UMass a ton of credit. They were out two of their leading scorers today and they still found a way to win," said Head Coach Jay Young. "I was disappointed in us defensively, especially at the end of the game when we needed a few big stops."

The Stags led 65-60 with 1:44 to play in regulation, but C.J. Kelly responded with a three-point play for the Minutemen. As the clock ticked under one minute to play on the ensuing Stags' possession, a good look from three-point range that would have extended the lead back to five rattled in-and-out for Jake Wojcik

Following an empty trip each way, C.J. Kelly again got to the rim and scored the game-tying bucket with 12 seconds to go. Fairfield's final possession resulted in another good look that didn't find the bottom of the net, and the game headed into overtime.

Former Quinnipiac standout Rich Kelly hit a three-pointer to open the extra stanza, and despite two points apiece from Jesus Cruz, Cook, Chris Maidoh and Caleb Green in overtime, the Stags never drew even the rest of the way. Fairfield's final possession came trailing 76-73 with under 30 seconds remaining, but the trip came up empty as UMass added a free throw in the waning seconds to cap the 77-73 victory.

Jeanne-Rose shot 8-for-11 from the field and 5-for-7 from the free throw line to amass his 21 points. Cook's second double-double of the season was comprised on 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Green added nine points with Cruz and Zach Crisler each netting eight.

Cook's 13 rebounds paced the Stags to a 41-33 advantage on the glass. Crus hauled in six boards with Crisler and Taj Benning each pulling down four to supplement the effort.

Fairfield was uncharacteristically on the short side of the turnover battle, committing 16 miscues while only forcing nine UMass giveaways.

Michael Steadman led four Minutemen in double figures with 20 points from the post. C.J. Kelly and Javohn Garcia each scored 13 points and Rich Kelly finished with 12.

Up next, the Stags return to Webster Bank Arena to host Wagner on Thursday, Dec. 23 at 2 p.m. The clash with the Seahawks is Fairfield's final non-conference game on the slate and also starts a four-game homestand that will also feature visits from Manhattan (Dec. 31), Iona (Jan. 2) and Marist (Jan. 7).

Tickets for Thursday's game are on sale now via Ticketmaster and the Webster Bank Arena box office.
