BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – In a game that featured six ties and nine lead changes, visiting Wagner was the team that emerged from the stalemate on Thursday at Webster Bank Arena, pulling away from Fairfield University Men's Basketball to claim a 63-50 decision. The Stags were led by
Caleb Green and
Chris Maidoh with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Â
With the loss, Fairfield completes the non-conference portion of the schedule with six wins – the most since the 2015-16 season. The Stags are also currently 2-0 in the MAAC to run their overall record to 8-5 on the campaign. Northeast Conference preseason favorite Wagner improves to 6-2 with the victory.
Â
"We knew coming in that we were going to have a very difficult game against a very good team. Wagner is a very talented team and I'm sure that they're going to win a lot of games in their conference, and they beat us at some of the things we knew they excel at. They got to the free throw line and did a good job on the offensive glass, and we just couldn't get anything going offensively," said Head Coach
Jay Young. "There's a lot for us to improve on as we get back into league play. We'll get right back to work after Christmas and focus on the things that will make us a better basketball team."
Â
Green's 11 points included two of Fairfield's six three-pointers.
Zach Crisler also canned a pair from distance en route to six points. Maidoh scored six of his 10 in the second half, shooting 4-for-5 from the field.
Â
Eight Stags scored in total, with
Taj Benning falling just shy of a double-double with nine points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Jake Wojcik added five points,
Allan Jeanne-Rose netted four,
Supreme Cook scored three and
Jesus Cruz tacked on two.
The Stags were edged in the rebounding battle for just the second time this season, hauling in 31 caroms to Wagner's 38. Both squads collected nine offensive boards, with Fairfield as the more opportunistic team converting 10 second-chance points compared to six for the Seahawks. Wagner made up the difference in turnovers, turning 12 Stags' giveaways into 15 points while the Stags managed only six points off nine takeaways.
Â
Despite being held well below their average of 73 points per game, Wagner still saw four scorers reach double figures, including 15 apiece from the preseason All-NEC duo of Alex Morales and Elijah Ford. Morales was held to a 3-for-10 shooting day by the Stags but contributed to the scoring with a 9-for-9 day at the charity stripe. Raekwon Rogers and Will Martinez also cracked double digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Â
Today's game was the start of a four-game homestand for the Stags, who have three MAAC contests at Webster Bank Arena on tap. Next weekend, Fairfield hosts Manhattan on Friday, Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. and then welcomes defending MAAC Champion Iona on Sunday, Jan. 2 at 1 p.m.
Â
The Jaspers are 8-3 overall and 1-1 in the MAAC, while Iona is 10-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference with a home game against Siena still pending before coming to Bridgeport.
The homestand wraps up on Friday, Jan. 7 against Marist.
