FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Director of Athletics
Paul Schlickmann has announced that
Bill Currier has signed a contract extension to remain the Head Coach of Fairfield Baseball through the 2026 season. Currier, a three-time MAAC Coach of the Year, led the Stags to their best season in school history in 2021, including the first-ever at-large bid for a MAAC baseball team into the NCAA Regionals.
"When Bill came to campus a decade ago, he immediately began creating a winning culture that has led to the 2016 MAAC Championship, three regular season championships and, of course, a trip to the finals of the Austin Regional this past spring as the MAAC's first-ever at-large NCAA qualifier," said Schlickmann. "While the 2021 season was a truly special time for Fairfield Baseball, I do not believe that it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Coach Currier has raised the bar for what our Stags can accomplish, and I am confident that he will continue to recruit and develop young men who will make our University proud of their achievements on the field, in the classroom and as Fairfield University graduates."
The Stags grabbed national attention during the 2021 season as the nation's last unbeaten team after winning a conference record 28-straight games to begin the campaign. The Stags earned the program's first-ever national ranking at No. 23 in
Baseball America's Top-25 poll. They went on to receive the MAAC's first-ever at-large bid into the NCAA Regionals and record two victories on the national stage, including a win over nationally-ranked Arizona State.
Fairfield also set the program's single season record with 39 victories in 2021, the fifth time the Stags have exceeded 30 wins under Currier. Fairfield finished the season as the top-ranked team in New England in the NEIBA poll and in the Top-30 nationally by
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
Currier has guided the rise of the Fairfield baseball program, leading the Stags to three regular season championships and the program's first-ever MAAC Tournament Championship in 2016.
Currier has mentored 36 All-Conference selections in his 10 years, compared to just 11 in the previous 30 seasons. Seventeen Stags have been named to the All-MAAC First Team, including back-to-back MAAC Player of the Year accolades in 2019 (Jack Gethings) and 2021 (
Mike Caruso). The Stags have also had seven players sign professional contracts during his tenure.
"I am very appreciative of our Director of Athletics
Paul Schlickmann and the athletic administration for their unwavering support for our program," Currier said. "I'm proud to be the head coach of this incredible group of young men, and I look forward to being in the dugout with them for years to come as we continue to challenge ourselves and push the limits of how high Fairfield Baseball can climb."
Currier will begin his 11th season as the head coach of the Stags this spring. He has led Fairfield to 257 wins and a .527 winning percentage – the highest winning percentage in program history – over the last decade. In total during his 32-year coaching career, Currier has amassed 749 wins and six conference Coach of the Year awards.
