DELAND, Fla. – The Fairfield University Baseball team carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning, but were hurt by two fielding errors in the frame in a 5-0 setback against Stetson, the host school in the Stetson Invitational.
Trey McLoughlin did not allow a hit in 7.1 innings of work as the Stags pitching staff surrendered just two hits on the evening.
Although McLoughlin did not allow a hit, he had to work through baserunners in almost every inning as he surrendered seven walks. Stetson stranded a runner in five of the first seven innings and was not able to get a runner past second base. McLoughlin struck out eight in his 7.1 frames. He was dominant at times, as during the third and seven innings only one batter was able to lift the ball out of the infield.
After allowing a one-out walk in the eighth,
Nick Grabek came in to relieve McLoughlin and almost worked out of a bases loaded jam. A fielding error allowed a run to score and a two out two run single extended the eighth inning that Stetson scored all five runs.
On the offensive end, the Stags were able to record just one hit, a
Dan Ryan single in the second. He was also the only runner to get into scoring position after a walk to
Dylan Reynolds.
Fairfield will complete their play in the Stetson Invitational when they take on Ohio State on Sunday at 7pm.
