FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A week after they opened their 2020 season in Greensboro, N.C., the Stags will head back to the same area when they face Boston College and host North Carolina A&T for three games this weekend. Fairfield will start with a contest against the Eagles on Saturday at 1pm and will then face the host Aggies immediately after. The Stags complete their weekend with another matchup against Boston College on Sunday at 1pm.
Â
The Stags are in search for their first win of 2020 after being swept in their season opening series at UNC Greensboro. Fairfield's pitching got off to a solid start in their debuts, pitching to a 3.75 ERA with batters hitting just .258 against them.
Trey McLoughlin started the momentum for the pitchers as he tossed 5.1 scoreless innings in the season opener.
Nick Grabek followed for the next 2.2 frames allowing just two hits.
Â
The duo kept UNC Greensboro's offense scoreless for eight innings, but the Spartan's duo of Jake Lewis and Austin Parsley was even better as they no-hit the Stags through nine innings. The Spartans would claim the no-hitter on a walk-off single in the ninth.
Â
Tristan Amone and
Ian Halpin both did not allow a run in their inning plus of work. Amone appeared in two games and has retired all six batters he has faced with three strikeouts.
Â
Mike Handal led the Stags offense with a .300 clip.
Justin Guerrera supplied the offense with a two-run homer in the second game.
Â
Boston College enters the game with a 3-4 record after being swept by No. 8 Arizona State. Joe Suozzi and Jack Cunnigham are two of four Eagles with double digit hits through their first seven games, each batting .462.
Â
It will be the first matchup since 1982 between the two Jesuit schools.
Â
The Stags will have one game against North Carolina A&T, who enters the weekend with a 2-6 record after a loss to North Carolina. The preseason favorites in the MEAC are led by Alex Bibb who has 10 hits and hitting .417. Preseason MEAC First Team selection Dustin Baber leads the squad with eight RBI.
Â
The Stags will next travel to Florida to take part in the Stetson Invitational and take on Harvard, Stetson, and Ohio State starting Friday, March 6 at 12:30 pm.
