FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will be looking for their first 5-0 MAAC start in 20 years when they head to New Rochelle, N.Y., to face the Iona Gaels on Saturday at 1pm. The Stags last won their first five games in conference play during the 2000-01 season, the season where they earned an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament.
Â
The last victory for the Stags was their most thrilling as
Sam Kramer drove and scooped in the game-winning layup with one second to go for a 72-70 victory. Kramer's game-winner was one of several key plays down the stretch, including
Molly Bauer deflecting the inbounds play on the game's final play for the one second to tick off.
Rachel Hakes also had a key defensive play as she stole the ball with 17 seconds left, leading to two
Lou Lopez-Senechal free throws to give the Stags a late lead.
Â
Kramer was one of four Stags in double figures as she had 13 points on 3-for-5 shooting from behind the arc. Kramer connected on her 126th career 3-pointer tying Cara Murphy '07 for 10th all-time. Next on the list is Kramer's former teammate
Casey Foley who hit 138 long range shots in her career.
Â
The Stags have been successful in close games during
Joe Frager's tenure as the Stags are now 21-10 in games decided by two points or fewer.
Â
Iona enters play winning two of their last three games, starting with reigning MAAC Champions Quinnipiac. The Gaels also defeated Monmouth with Jauna Camillion hitting the game deciding basket.
Â
Two Gaels average double figures in scoring led by Morgan Rachu who adds 12.5 a game. Rachu is also the team's top 3-point shooter leading the team in both 3-point field goals (32) and percentage (.376). She is also the team's top rebounder at 6.8 boards per outing.
Â
Fairfield will return home to face the Jaspers on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 7pm on the George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall.
