Field Hockey Gains Fifth Straight Win With Shutout Of Indiana

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. – You can add a Midwestern sweep to the list of accomplishments for the Fairfield University field hockey team.

The Stags completed a two-game run in Missouri this afternoon with a 3-0 win over Big Ten foe Indiana University. The result extended Fairfield's winning streak to five games and represented the team's second shutout in three games. Goalkeeper Zoe Rosen made two saves in her second clean sheet of the season.

"This was a big weekend for our program," Head Coach Jackie Kane said. "Coming home with two wins against strong non-conference opponents helps us continue to build momentum and confidence as we move toward our conference season."

The first quarter did not offer many offensive chances between the two teams with only one shot being recorded in the first 15 minutes. That opportunity came in the fifth minute when Page Lowry found an opening in the Hoosiers' defense and sent a shot toward goal. The ball never made it to the cage as an Indiana defender stepped in front to turn away the attempt. The Stags would garner a penalty corner about a minute later but no shot was logged.

The Stags broke the game open in the second quarter by scoring a pair of goals off just four shots. Fairfield was granted a penalty corner about seven minutes into the quarter with Danielle Profita being given the restart chance. Her pass found Luzi Persiehl who finished the play with a shot that beat the goalkeeper and put Fairfield in front 1-0.

In the eighth minute of the quarter, Indiana was assessed a green card to give a one player advantage to Fairfield. The Stags took full advantage about a minute into the penalty as Madison Hoskins converted a pass from Julianna Kratz to increase the lead at 2-0.

Fairfield turned up the pressure in the third quarter as it outshot Indiana by a 6-1 count. Lowry was at the heart of the team's early pressure with Page Lowry putting two shots on goal. One of those shots was turned away by Indiana goalkeeper Sachi Ananias while the other was credited as a defensive save. The Stags took the final four shots of the period, three of which required stops rom Ananias.

The Stags posted the final goal of the game in the fourth period, courtesy of Faith Spaziano who beat the goalkeeper on the team's first shot of the quarter. Fairfield's dominance continued in the quarter, illustrated by its 5-1 edge in shots. Indiana's lone shot in the quarter required some attention from Rosen, who kicked away the attempt for her second save.

"Our defense has stayed composed all season," Coach Kane said. "Emily Halderson, Kelly Buckley, and MacKenzie Boyle deserve much praise for their ability to deny scoring opportunities. Zoe Rosen came up with a huge split save today which kept us on task defensively. She was focused and stayed positive with really good instruction from the back."

Coach Kane brings her team back to campus for the start of a four-game home stand which begins Friday against Columbia University. The run of games also includes Providence College on Sunday, Northeastern on September 27, and Sacred Heart on October 4.
