FAIRFIELD, Conn. – After a historic spring playing for the Fairfield University Baseball team, several Stags kept their momentum going by finding success in collegiate summer leagues across the region. Sixteen different Stags just finished competing in those summer leagues, with five student-athletes earning All-Star recognition and three Fairfield athletes being placed on All-League Teams.
Trey McLoughlin grabbed First Team honors in the NECBL while
Nick Grabek and
Justin Guerrera earned Second Team laurels in the PGCBL. Southpaws
Michael Sansone and
Tristan Amone were both named All-Stars in their respective leagues.
"We're very proud of our pitchers and position players that kept up their success from the spring," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "Especially with how well they did down the stretch to our success in the MAAC Tournament. They kept it up over the summer by making the All-Star teams and really representing our Fairfield Stags baseball program. We're very happy with their progress over the summer and hopefully it leads to being better when they return to campus in a month."
One of those student-athletes that has shown the most growth in the last few months is rising junior
Trey McLoughlin, who built on his finish to 2019 into an impressive showing in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL).
McLoughlin was one of three pitchers chosen to the League's First Team, compiling a 4-1 record with a 2.75 ERA during the regular season for the Mystic Schooners. McLoughlin was also selected to start the All-Star Game for the Southern Division and pitched a shutout inning before rain canceled the event. He would finish in the top-five in the league in both ERA (2.75) and strikeouts (48). The most impressive outing of his summer season came in his Schooners debut as he tossed five shutout innings with eight strikeouts.
Along with McLoughlin, his fellow Stag starter
Michael Sansone was also named to the NECBL All-Star team but did not appear in the game before the rain stoppage. During the regular season, Sansone appeared in 15 games and recorded a 2.78 ERA while holding opponents to a .256 batting average. He earned one victory during the regular season by striking out eight in four shutout innings against Danbury. Sansone helped the Newport Gulls reach the NECBL Playoffs and held a 1.42 ERA in his two outings.
A pair of Stags also found success in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) as
Nick Grabek and
Justin Guerrera were named to the PGCBL Second Team.
After a breakout sophomore season that featured a MAAC leading nine saves, Grabek continued his momentum by throwing 26.2 innings in six starts for the Albany Dutchmen. He held a 1.42 ERA and a .194 batting average against after his first six appearances and allowed one run or fewer in all but one of his outings. That success helped the right-hander earn a roster spot for the Bourne Braves of the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League. Grabek got one start in the Cape Cod League and fired four innings while allowing just one solo home run in a no decision against Falmouth.
Rising sophomore
Justin Guerrera also saw success in the PGCBL, joining his Fairfield teammate Grabek on the Second Team roster. Playing for the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs, Guerrera batted .306 with 37 hits, three home runs, 25 RBI, and 10 stolen bases. He ended the season with six multiple hit games in his last 10 outings. As a rookie for the Stags in 2019, Guerrera tallied 67 hits, the second most by a freshman in school history.
Left-hander
Tristan Amone also had a very productive summer as the rising senior appeared in eight games and started five while recording a 2.91 ERA for the Long Island Road Warriors in the Hamptons League. Amone saved his best performance for last as he ended the summer with a masterful seven shutout innings surrendering just one hit and striking out 10 in a 1-0 win over the Sag Harbor Whalers. Amone struck out 39 in 43.1 innings while giving up just nine walks.
These five Stags were part of the 16 different student-athletes that were placed on summer league teams this season. Fairfield is coming off a program-record 35 victories in 2019 including the program's first-ever win over a nationally ranked team as they defeated No. 22 UConn. The Stags reached the MAAC Championship Series for the second time in the last four years before falling to Quinnipiac in extra innings.
