Baseball’s Rally Falls Short in Finale

CARY, N.C. – The Fairfield University Baseball team rallied to bring the go-ahead run to the plate in the top of the ninth inning, but Penn State was able to shut the door and complete the three-game sweep over the Stags with a 4-2 final score.

Jack Gethings started the ninth inning rally with a two-out triple down the right field line, his second triple of the game. Anthony Boselli, who drove in a run with a double last night, notched his second run scoring hit of the year with a single to left. Gethings would score his third run of the season, bringing his career total to 122, just three shy of the top-10 in program history.

Griffin Watson would pinch run for Boselli and would advance to second on a Dylan Reynolds walk. However, Penn State's Kyle Virbitsky would get the final hitter to fly out to end the game.

The Stags fell behind 3-0 in the opening inning on a three-run home run by senior Jordan Bowersox. Michael Sansone, who was making his collegiate debut, settled down after the long ball giving up just two hits, none out of the infield in his six innings of work. Sansone retired eight-straight before a bunt single gave the Nittany Lions another base runner, but he was quickly erased as Mike Caruso threw him out trying to steal second.

The Stags would score their first run in the fourth, started again by a Gethings triple. He would be brought home on a Reynolds sacrifice fly. That would be Fairfield's last hit until the ninth inning.

Along with Sansone's six strikeout performance, the bullpen kept the game close with Eli Oliphant surrendering just one unearned run in the final two innings.

The Stags will return to the state of North Carolina when they take on Campbell for a three-game series starting Friday at 5pm.
