Stags Edged in Tenth at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Fairfield University Baseball team forced extra innings against the reigning Big South Regular Season and Tournament champions, but Campbell would end the contest that stretched to the early morning on a RBI double as the Stags fell 3-2.

After a two hour rain delay, the two teams went scoreless for two innings before weather forced another delay and the game would not resume until 10pm. Austin Pope threw those first two frames, not allowing a hit and striking out three of the seven hitters he faced.

Pope would sit after the game resumed two hours later, and the Camels would score their first two runs in the third on a Matthew Barefoot, the Big South Preseason Player of the Year, RBI double. Barefoot would later score on a squeeze play.

The Stags would tie the game two innings later, tallying solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Mike Caruso doubled home Anthony Boselli in the fourth. Boselli would add to his team-leading RBI total in the fifth as he singled home Tim Zeng.

The Fairfield bullpen would battle with Campbell for the rest of the night with Eli Oliphant and Nick Grabek combining for the final eight innings. Oliphant threw three-straight shutout innings to end his four innings of work. Grabek would strike out four and surrender just the two hits in the tenth including the RBI double to end the contest at 12:30am. The 3.1 innings was the longest outing of his career.

Jack Gethings joined Boselli as the two Stag to record multiple hits in the contest. Zeng, Caruso, and Justin Guerrera accounted for the other three base knocks.

The two teams will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Saturday.
