Men's Soccer Hosts Saint Peter's Saturday Afternoon

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's soccer team will play one of its two home afternoon games this Saturday when it hosts Saint Peter's University at Lessing Field. The game is scheduled for a 3 pm start and completes the Stags' two-game conference home stand.

The team comes off a 0-0 draw with Rider University, a match which featured the last two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champions. Fairfield captured the 2017 MAAC championship on its home pitch while Rider earned the 2018 MAAC title on the road. The match certainly lived up to the reputation that would feature two champions as two teams were nearly even in all statistical categories and each enjoyed advantages throughout the match. To further show how even the two teams played, one can look at the statistics which showed Rider enjoying a 15-14 advantage in shots taken and Fairfield holding a 8-7 edge in shots on goal.

Saint  Peter's dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 decision to Quinnipiac in double overtime in its MAAC opener. The Bobcats scored to take a lead in the 86th minute before Alex Garcia scored for the Peacocks with 31 seconds left in regulation. Quinnipiac rallied with the game winner in the 104th minute. Dominic Laws represents the team's top scorer with four goals and four assists for 12 points, followed by Jordan Jowers' five points off two goals and an assist. Goalkeepers Robbie Anderson (1.73 GAA, 363 minutes) and Herman Wolf (1.02 GAA, 353 minutes) share the goalkeeper duties.

The result extended Fairfield's MAAC regular-season unbeaten streak to 19 games, sporting a 14-0-5 record during that run. The Stags recorded their second straight clean sheet, raising the defense's scoreless streak to 216 minutes. Goalkeeper Gordon Botterill made seven saves to register the shutout, his third of the campaign. He owns a 1.15 goals against average with a .828 save percentage (48 saves). Fernando Robayo's two goals continue to sit on top of the Stags' scoring leaders. Matt McGlinchey also has four points to his credit, collecting a goal and two assists on the season. Cooper Knecht netted his first career goal in the team's 1-0 win over Army West Point, one of Fairfield's four goal scorers in 2019.

The Stags will play their next two conference games on the road, starting with next Saturday's match up against Iona College on October 12. The trip continues on Wednesday, October 16 with a trip to Marist College for a 7 pm game. Fairfield's next home game is scheduled for Saturday, October 19 against Monmouth University. The match will take place at Lessing Field at 7 pm.
