Men's Soccer Finishes Home Slate With Canisius On Wednesday

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's soccer team will play its final regular-season home game of the 2019 campaign on Wednesday, welcoming Canisius College to Lessing Field. The game is scheduled for 4 pm.

The Stags are looking for their third win in their last four outings, coming off a 3-0 win against Siena College last weekend. The performance marks the third time in seven Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) games that Fairfield posted three goals. In the Siena game, Marcus Nordgard scored his first goal of the season, putting Fairfield in front for good with a header off a cross from Diallo Simon-Ponte. Matt McGlinchey and Jonathan Filipe added second-half goals that ended any comeback hopes by Siena. Gordon Botterill made seven saves to register another shutout.

McGlinchey's goal came off a penalty kick, his second such goal this season, which placed him first among the Stags' scoring leaders with eight points. The midfielder also has a team-high four assists in his scoring total, two of which have come in MAAC play. Filipe's goal was also his first of the season after registering four goals a year ago. He currently has three points in 2019, also picking up an assist in the MAAC opener against Saint Peter's. Botterill saw his goals against average drop to 1.33 after collecting his third shutout of the season. He currently leads the MAAC in saves with 74 and in save percentage with a .787 mark, and ranks fourth among conference goalkeepers in goals against average.

Like Fairfield, Canisius has the ability to score goals, netting three goals in two games this season. Scoring has been more of a premium as of late though as the team is looking to halt a four-game skid which includes a 2-1 setback against Manhattan College in its last outing. Julius Schoner scored the Golden Griffs lone goal in the game, his second goal in his last four appearances. He, along with teammate Federico Mereto, has six points on the campaign with two goals and two assists. Troy Brady serves as the team's offensive player so far, recording four goals and two assists for 10 points.

Following Wednesday's match, the Stags will close out the regular season with a pair of road games against MAAC opponents. The two-game run starts with a trip to Quinnipiac University on November 2 for a 1 pm game. After the weekend, Fairfield will take a trip to upstate New York for a meeting with Niagara University on November 6, a match that kicks off at 4 pm.
