Tyler Nelson Selected To All-Met Writers First Team

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- While the season has been over for six weeks, Tyler Nelson still continues to garner honors and awards for his performance on the basketball court in 2017-18. The senior guard received a berth to the All-Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association's first team as the organization announced its annual postseason awards today. Nelson will be honored at the MBWA's annual dinner on Wednesday night.

Nelson comes off one of the best offensive seasons in school history which included setting the school record for career points (2,172 points) and points in a season (732 points). He became the first student-athlete in Fairfield men's basketball history to surpass 700 points in a season. Nelson, who was recently named an All-Tournament player at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, ended the year as the leading scorer in the MAAC with a 22.2 scoring average, a number which also ranked in the NCAA Division I statistics.

Nelson also showed his shooting range by setting the program's standard for three-point shooting, netting a career record 315 three-point field goals over his four-year stay. He hit that mark after netting 104 three pointers in 2017-18, becoming the first Stag in school history to reach the century mark in that category.

His list of honors from 2017-18 also includes his fourth berth to a conference postseason awards team. He collected All-MAAC first team honors for the second straight season this year after garnering All-MAAC third team accolades as a sophomore and a spot on the MAAC All-Rookie team in his inaugural year with the program. The guard was a NABC All-District first team pick in 2017-18 after earning All-District honors a year ago. Nelson picked up a spot on the All-ECAC team earlier.

The Fairfield University men's basketball team, under Head Coach Sydney Johnson, finished the 2017-18 campaign with a 17-16 overall record which included a seven-game winning streak over the final weeks of the season. The Stags advanced to the MAAC Tournament championship game, the second such appearance under Coach Johnson.
