Softball Outscored By Seton Hall, 9-7

WEST ORANGE, N.J. -- Courtney Hankins and Kate Robinson combined for half of the Fairfield University softball team's 14 hits but Seton Hall University was still able to outscore the Stags and took a 9-7 decision on Tuesday afternoon. Hankins finished the game with four hits in five at-bats while Robinson posted three hits and earned a walk in her four plate appearances.

The Stags opened the game with three runs on three hits but it was a walk that started things for the visitors. Mikayla Rubin worked a base on balls and took second after Amanda Ulzheimer put down a bunt. Lindsay Olaff's grounder produced an out but also the game's first run as Rubin scampered home. Robinson picked up the second run of the inning with an infield single to deep shortstop, while Makenna DiGuilio drove home the final run of the inning with a bases loaded walk.

Seton Hall closed the gap to a run when it secured two runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Pirates strung three straight hits together to plate the two runs including a pair of doubles and a base hit. Fairfield added to its lead with a run in the third inning, courtesy of a double from Robinson and a run-scoring triple off the bat of DiGuilio which made the score 4-2. In the bottom of the inning, the home team tied the game when Hailey Arteaga's fly ball cleared the outfield fence for a two-run homer, knotting the score at 4-4.

Once again, Fairfield was able to answer a Seton Hall rally with some of its own offensive, this time sending three base runners across home plate to regain the lead at 7-4 in the fourth inning. Angelina McGuire stroked a two-run single for the inning's highlight, chasing home Alisha Marshall and Courtney Hankins. Robinson brought home the third run with an RBI double, bringing the score to 7-4.

Seton Hall scored five runs in the next two innings, including a game-tying three spot in the fifth inning. Alexis Walkden was responsible for four of those runs, launching a two-run homer in both the fifth and sixth innings. Her second home run pushed the Pirates into the lead for good, pushing the score to its final margin, 9-7.

Fairfield will return to the diamond on Wednesday when it plays at Columbia University, beginning at 4 pm.
