TUCSON, Ariz. – After one of the most masterful pitching performances of his collegiate career, Fairfield University Baseball junior
John Signore was named one of Collegiate Baseball's National Player of the Week, becoming the second Stag ever to take home the award. Signore struck out a career-high 14 batters over eight two-hit innings allowing the Stags to take an eventual 1-0 extra inning victory at Canisius.
"He mixed three pitches as well as you possibly can," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "His percentage of the three pitches he threw were very high. He worked efficiently, he worked quickly and did a great job of keeping them off balance. He pitched even better when he had runners on base."
Signore started his career day as dominant as a pitcher can be, striking out 10 hitters through the first four innings including striking out the side in the second and fourth innings. He allowed just a single in the first and seventh innings and a walk in the eighth. In his only jam of the day with a runner at third with one out in the seventh, Signore struck out the final two batters swinging. Eight of the 14 strikeouts went down swinging.
Signore currently leads the MAAC with 40 strikeouts while his 11.74 Ks per nine innings and 5.71 strikeout-to-walk ratio ranks second in the league. His 174 career strikeouts now brings him in the top-10 in program history, placing him ninth all-time as a Stag.
The right hander was one of three pitchers listed among Collegiate Baseball's National Players of the Week list joining Oakland's Jake Lee and Bradley's Mitch Janssen. Signore becomes the second Stag ever to receive this award, and the first since
Jake Salpietro after being named the MAAC Tournament's MVP in 2016.
The Stags are back in action on Tuesday at 3pm at Central Connecticut State.
